Dear Parents,
Welcome back! I definitely needed that break. This week we have a lot of things to cover--so if you have any questions after reading these things, please let me know!
Homework
This week we will be starting homework. Your child will come home with their homework folder today and it will be due Friday. Normally homework folders will come home on Mondays. Please make sure your child returns their folder promptly on Friday. We find that if you get it in after Friday--we are slower changing out the books because it takes away from my teaching time to change those after.
Homework consists of a spelling list (we will test those words on Friday), a making words sheet (cut up the letters and make as many words as the child can with those letters. The letters together make a mystery word), and some weeks there is a comprehension sheet and others there is not. Then, each child will have take home stories--these are paper copies. I know these are fairly easy for most of the students. I send these books home for a couple of reasons: 1--to engrain a habit of taking them home and reading them, 2--to practice reading fluency (if they are easy--that is great--you can reread the stories to work on using a good voice and speed), and 3--some children will be about this level. If you find that you are in that category, don't worry. These books are good for helping your child to develop their reading.
You will also find a math sheet in your homework and some Chinese homework from Mrs. Shumway. If you have questions on these, please let her know.
Don't forget that off-track packets (completed or not) are due back Wednesday, Sept. 7. We will be going over the book reports during the next few weeks in our class. Thanks for your help and support in these.
Bookorders
This week I have also sent home a book order form. Scholastic has a great program set up online to make it easier for you and me to order books. Because of this--I send home usually one order form a month, but I make many catalogs available to you online. When you order online, we also earn free books for our classroom!

Grandparent's Day
We will be celebrating Grandparent's Day on Friday from 10:00-10:40 am. Please make sure you check the notes in the homework folder for more information on this activity.
We also are in need of some donations for this activity. We usually serve milk and cookies for this event. If you are able to donate cookies, milk, or cups, please let Mrs. Shumway or myself know.
Picture Day
Picture day will be on Wednesday, September 14. Please see the fliers in your child's homework folder for more information on ordering individual pictures and class composite forms.
T-Shirt Orders
PTA is doing T-Shirt orders. Please see the note in your homework folder about these.
Volunteers
I am compiling the Volunteer schedule this week. If you have a day you'd like to come in--please email me or send me a note. I definitely need some parents on Friday that can help with the homework folders. If you are available--please let me know and I can train you!

Writing Prompt
This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!
Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)

Narrative Story (needs a beginning, middle, and an end)
Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

About Miss Merritt
I am originally from Blackfoot, Idaho. I love small towns! I attended BYU-Idaho for my undergraduate studies and received my Masters degree through Southern Utah University. I recently passed my National Boards and am glad to say I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I love learning and enjoy helping others love it too! This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade.
I love reading! When I was younger, I used to work in libraries and I have developed a great love of childrens books. I love books by Barbara Park, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood. I have currently been reading classics like Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
I love the outdoors as well. I love camping and hiking, but I also love traveling and seeing new places. I am a big fan of the beach and I love swimming! I have been to Thailand a few times (my mom is from there!) and I love to see the world. Every year I have a goal to go on a vacation somewhere new.
