August 9, 2010

Dear Parents,

We track off this week! I hope you have some fun things planned for our time we are off track. This week there will be some important things coming home, so please watch for those!

Off Track Packets
Off track packets are not a mandatory thing, but just some activities we would like your child to do while they are away from school. These activities will help maintain the growth that your child has already shown. Please read the off track letter for more details on the activities.

Off track packets will be due on September 8. If your child returns the packet, they will receive a treat! Thanks for your help in this.

Poems
I've been debating when to pass off the August poems and have decided that it would be easiest if we pass them off this Friday, August 13. Then, your child can start learning the new ones for September.

Bookorders
I am sending home the first book order for the year today. Book orders are a great way to buy books for your child on their level for a good price. If you are interested in ordering, there are two ways you can do this. I allow you to order online, or you can send me a check with your order form (please no cash!). If you order online, I have a few more options of catalogs available too!

To order online, just follow these simple steps from Scholastic:

Dear Parent,

Now it's easier than ever to find the right books for your child — and help us earn FREE books for our classroom library at the same time!

With new online ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs, you can choose from a much wider selection of books than in the printed flyer. Plus, you can send your orders directly to me online and use your credit card.

Best of all, our class earns a FREE book every time a parent places their order online.

It's so simple! Here's how it works:
  • SIGN UP at www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, click the "Don't have a User Name and Password?" link, then register for your own username and password. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code shown above. This code ensures that your order is sent to me.

  • SELECT the books you'd like to order from over 500 titles available online...and take advantage of online-only specials and discounts.

  • SEND your order to me online by the due date. Books will be delivered directly to our classroom, as always.

Of course, you can still order using the form from the printed flyer. But why not experience for yourself how convenient it is to order online?

Ordering online is fast, easy, and secure. Plus our whole class benefits thanks to the FREE books we'll earn with every parent online order.

Go to www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs now to get started.

Track Change

Don't forget that when we track back on, your child will be switching morning teachers. If your child is in the red group, they will start with Mrs. Shumway. If your child is in the blue group, they will be starting with me. Hopefully this doesn't cause too much confusion, but it should be good for giving the children a chance to start fresh in each class!

Thanks for all you do for your child. Let me know if you have questions or concerns!
Miss Merritt

Writing Prompt

This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!

Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)

Prompt Week #1
Narrative Story (needs a beginning, middle, and an end)
Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

May Poems

Seed, Sprout, Flower

A seed is planted:
First a sprout,
then stem,
and leaves,
and buds
come out.
Buds grow bigger,
smelling sweet,
bees and birds come
'round to eat.
Bees and birds
help flowers spread
their new seeds on
the garden bed...
A seed is planted.
~Helen H. Moore

Friends
Tall friends, short friends,
Skinny and wide;
Red haired, black haired,
Side by side.

Old friends, young friends,
And in-betweens;
Moms and Grandpas,
Tots and teens.

From Washington
To Delaware
Friends are found
Most anywhere.
