Dear Parents,
Sorry I am so slow getting this update on! Tracking off is a busy thing..and we have been getting ready for it for the last few days!
Here's some info before we go off track!
Off Track Packets
I sent the off track packets home yesterday! Please remember off track packets are not mandatory...but just simply some things to help your child continue to grow and develop when we are off track. If anything else--PLEASE KEEP READING WITH YOUR CHILD! This alone will help them so much! I am a firm believer in at home reading--it helps your children grow!
The packet also contains information for the 2nd book report. Your child will need 3 by the end of the year. We will be doing another one when we come back on!
These packets will be due back on Thursday, January 29. Returned packets (completed or not) will receive a treat! Thanks for your cooperation in this!
Mrs. Claus's Christmas Cookies
We had been reading a book about Santa in class (Santa Claus by Rod Green -- ISBN-13:978-1-4169-2758-7). The book went through and taught us all about Santa and the things he does.
The book had a recipe for Mrs. Claus's Christmas Cookies...and your kids wanted the recipe. I told them I would post it, so here it is!
Ingredients:
4 oz White Sugar
4 oz Unsalted Butter
6 oz Flour
1 tbsp Milk
1 tbsp Molasses
1 tbsp Baking Soda
1 3/4 oz Dark Chocolate Chips
Preparation
Preheat oven to 325
Grease two large baking sheets
Directions
*In a large mixing bowl, beat the sugar and butter together with a wooden spoon until fluffy.
*Sift the flour and mix into the butter and sugar.
*Pour the molasses and the milk into a small saucepan and warm over low heat until the molasses has melted.
*Add the baking soda to the saucepan and stir. The mixture will froth a little.
*Add the molasses mixture to the mixing bowl, and blend with a wooden spoon.
*Fold in the chocolate chips with a large metal spoon.
*Take spoonfuls of the mixture and roll them into small balls, then place them about two inches apart on the baking sheet.
*Take a fork dipped in flour and press down on each ball twice to make a little X, spreading the mixture out slightly.
*Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, until they are golden brown.
*Remove the cookies from the oven, transfer them to a cooling rack, and allow the cookies to cool for five minutes.
*The cookies should be crunchy around the edges, but still slightly chewy in the middle.
*Don't be tempted to eat the cookies while they are hot or you will burn your mouth!
Eat them all...or save some for Santa.
Makes 18-20 cookies
Thanks
Thanks for all of your ideas and support on my survey! It will help me out with National Boards. Whenever you have feedback on something I am doing well or something I can do better, please let me know! I appreciate it!
Have a happy and safe holiday! I hope your travel plans are safe and that you enjoy your long break! I know I need it too! Take time to enjoy being with your kids--they are great!
If you have questions during the break, please feel free to contact email me. I will check that regularly! I will also try and update this as we get closer to coming back!

Writing Prompt
This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!
Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)
Prompt Week #1
Narrative Story (needs a beginning, middle, and an end)
Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

Seed, Sprout, Flower
A seed is planted:
First a sprout,
then stem,
and leaves,
and buds
come out.
Buds grow bigger,
smelling sweet,
bees and birds come
'round to eat.
Bees and birds
help flowers spread
their new seeds on
the garden bed...
A seed is planted.

About Miss Merritt
I am originally from Blackfoot, Idaho. I love small towns! I attended BYU-Idaho for my undergraduate studies and received my Masters degree through Southern Utah University. I recently passed my National Boards and am glad to say I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I love learning and enjoy helping others love it too! This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade.
I love reading! When I was younger, I used to work in libraries and I have developed a great love of childrens books. I love books by Barbara Park, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood. I have currently been reading classics like Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
I love the outdoors as well. I love camping and hiking, but I also love traveling and seeing new places. I am a big fan of the beach and I love swimming! I have been to Thailand a few times (my mom is from there!) and I love to see the world. Every year I have a goal to go on a vacation somewhere new.
