June 17, 2013

Dear Parents,

I can't believe how close to the end we are. It has been an exciting year with a lot of growth for your children. I hope you can see the same growth that I am seeing here at school. They are not the same kids they were a year ago!

Teddy Bear Day
Teddy Bear Day is on Thursday, June 20. We will be having a Teddy Bear's Picnic for lunch with the other first grade students. We sent home a note last week asking if your child would like a sack lunch from home or a sack lunch from the school. If you chose one from home, please remember to send it with your child that morning.

Your child may bring a teddy bear for the day, or they may have a different stuffed animal to bring. But, the one rule is it has to be able to fit in their backpack.

Mustang Pride Goals
We are trying to wrap up Mustang Pride stuff this week. We will be passing off the final poems on Friday. Some kids are sooo close to having this one passed off.

Also, there are a few kids who almost know their address, except they don't know the zip code or the city/state. If you can double check that with your child if they don't know that.

Jump rope has been a hard one for some too. If you child hasn't passed that one off yet, keep practicing at home!


Reading For Ice Cream
Keep on reading. I have been collecting names of people who have offered to help out that day with our ice cream party by donating items or coming in. I will be emailing this week sometime to let you know what I am in need of! Thanks for your willingness to help!

Bubble Day
Next friday, June 28, we will be celebrating Bubble day. For this day your child will need a bottle of bubbles! Thanks!


Library Books
Please return all library books this week. If you have lost one, check with the library to find out how much you owe. Thanks for helping us get this taken care of!

Last Day of School
The last day of school will be on July 2. We will not be sending back packs that day--so make sure that they have them up til then as we start sending things home for the end of the year.

Absences 
I know as the year closes that some of you have fun things planned for your kids to do that involve missing school. Miss Chang and I are working on final testing and things, so if you could let us know the days you are planning to miss so we can make sure that we get those tests in with your child, that would be great for us. I would hate for your child to have a 0 on a score because we ran out of time to test them.

Writing Prompt

This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!

Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)


Prompt Week #1
Narrative Story (needs a beginning, middle, and an end)
Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

About Miss Merritt

I am originally from Blackfoot, Idaho. I love small towns! I attended BYU-Idaho for my undergraduate studies and received my Masters degree through Southern Utah University. I recently passed my National Boards and am glad to say I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I love learning and enjoy helping others love it too! This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade.

I love reading! When I was younger, I used to work in libraries and I have developed a great love of childrens books. I love books by Barbara Park, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood. I have currently been reading classics like Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.

I love the outdoors as well. I love camping and hiking, but I also love traveling and seeing new places. I am a big fan of the beach and I love swimming! I have been to Thailand a few times (my mom is from there!) and I love to see the world. Every year I have a goal to go on a vacation somewhere new.
