Dear Parents,
We are ready to go off track. Thanks so much for having your kids here each day to help us get them in our routine. Hopefully, when we come back on, it will be a smooth step back into what we have been doing.
Just a few reminders this week of things happening at school.
Jog-A-Thon
While we are off track, the school will be having their annual jog-a-thon. This is PTA's one chance to earn money to help us with school things (ie field trips, assemblies, reflections, etc.). They included a note in the envelope that went home last week.
They also sent home a permission slip. In order to have your child participate, the school needs a permission slip from you allowing it. Whether or not you will be in attendance, if our whole class returns the permission slip, PTA, will give us a treat. If your child returns the permission slip and the envelope (even without money), they also will receive a treat from PTA.
Our money packets are due this week on August 15. Please return them by that day. The Jog-A-Thon will be on Friday, September 7. You are welcome to come back to attend this event.
If you need more information on this, let me know! Thanks for your help and participation and helping us to be able to have some fun activities in our school.
Poems
I have had a few questions about poems. Because it takes time to pass them off, we usually will save them for one of the days towards the end of the month to do as a class. So, since we are going off track this week, our poem pass off day for August will be on August 16 (Thursday). Have your poems ready to pass of that day.
In September, our pass off day will be September 28. Thanks for your understanding and help with this!
Off-Track Packets
We will be sending home off track packets while the students are off. These packets are not mandatory, but have several Mustang Pride goals that we will be passing off for the year. Most importantly, I would like you to make sure your children keep reading when we are off. If you go on vacation, bring along some books for them to read. They need to be reading 15 minutes daily.
Please make sure you return the packets when we come back on September 10th. We will also turn in your August reading calendar that day. Please make sure your minutes are added up for me! If you have questions on the off track packet, please feel free to email! Enjoy your break.
Volunteers
Thanks to those parents who have emailed saying when you'd like to come in. We will start volunteers on the week we come back on track. If you are a Friday mom--I'll be sending you an email to invite you to our homework folder tutorial on Monday, September 10 at 8 am before school. Thanks for helping in our room!
Once again, I appreciate all you do to help us with this exciting program. I spent the last several days in a conference learning about how great it is that your kids are getting this opportunity. It is a privilege to be able to learn another language, so as we start this adventure, remember that it may get tough at times. If you can stick to it though, it will be well worth it for your child in the long run.

Writing Prompt
This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!
Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)

Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

About Miss Merritt
I am originally from Blackfoot, Idaho. I love small towns! I attended BYU-Idaho for my undergraduate studies and received my Masters degree through Southern Utah University. I recently passed my National Boards and am glad to say I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I love learning and enjoy helping others love it too! This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade.
I love reading! When I was younger, I used to work in libraries and I have developed a great love of childrens books. I love books by Barbara Park, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood. I have currently been reading classics like Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
I love the outdoors as well. I love camping and hiking, but I also love traveling and seeing new places. I am a big fan of the beach and I love swimming! I have been to Thailand a few times (my mom is from there!) and I love to see the world. Every year I have a goal to go on a vacation somewhere new.
