Dear Parents,
Happy 100th Day of School! I hope you enjoyed your three weeks off! I know that it went by quickly for me--especially working on report cards. We are coming back to a busy couple weeks. Please make sure you stay updated on what is happening here in our classroom.
Safety Note
While we were off track, you may have heard of the attempted abduction in Herriman. The school is sending out a reminder not to remind your children to be safe when they are walking to and from school. Please make sure you are going over these things with your children to keep them safe!
Poems and Calendars
Poems will be passed off on February 29th. Reading calendars will be due on March 1. Please make sure you read your 300 minutes!
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent teacher conferences are next week--Wednesday and Thursday. Please sign up! Don't forget to go to the online scheduler to make your appointment.
We also have two slots available on Tuesday, March 6, in the afternoon at 3:30 and 4:00. If you are interested in coming to one of those slots, please email me. We will let you know if you are one of the first to ask for that spot! Thanks for helping us get you all in!
Chicken Soup with Rice Party
On Friday we will be having our Chicken Soup with Rice Party. For this party, I'll need two mom's to help out between 10:15-10:40. If you are interested in helping out with this party, please let me know!
Survey
Your child will be coming home with a survey today that needs to be returned to the school. Thanks for giving our school feedback to help us do better!
Legislative Stuff
While I was off track, I had the opportunity to spend some time at the capitol building working on National Boards things and I was able to learn about different bills that will be affecting our state if they are passed. I am not able to tell you what I think about them, or how you should think, but I think it is very important to make sure you are educated on what is going on and let your legislators know what you think is best for your community. Take some time to let them know. Some are major and will definitely affect the education of your children.
No Name Items
I had a reading calendar that was turned in with no name on it at all. It has some red crayon marks and blue ink and pencil. If it is yours, please let me know. Also--I have received an item in the book orders that I can't figure out who it belongs to. If you were missing an order item and can tell me what it is and how much it cost, let me know and I'll get it to you!
As always, it is a wonderful privilege to be able to work with you in the Chinese Program. Thanks for all you do for your kids!

Writing Prompt
This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!
Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)

Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

About Miss Merritt
I am originally from Blackfoot, Idaho. I love small towns! I attended BYU-Idaho for my undergraduate studies and received my Masters degree through Southern Utah University. I recently passed my National Boards and am glad to say I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I love learning and enjoy helping others love it too! This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade.
I love reading! When I was younger, I used to work in libraries and I have developed a great love of childrens books. I love books by Barbara Park, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood. I have currently been reading classics like Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
I love the outdoors as well. I love camping and hiking, but I also love traveling and seeing new places. I am a big fan of the beach and I love swimming! I have been to Thailand a few times (my mom is from there!) and I love to see the world. Every year I have a goal to go on a vacation somewhere new.
