October 26, 2009

Dear Parents,

I hope you enjoyed your off track time! I needed mine! My doctor said I am mostly healed and can walk again without the crutches. I am not allowed to run for another month still, but I can walk! So, I will still be taking it easy this month, but am grateful for the ability to get around easier!

This week is crazy with Halloween and being back. Here's a quick glimpse of what is going on:

Spelling and Halloween:
With Halloween being on Friday, we are pressed for time with our spelling test. To make up for this, we will be having our spelling test Thursday afternoon. Thanks for your understanding with this.

Our school will have the annual Halloween Parade at 9:00 a.m. Parents are invited to come and watch in the gym as we march around the school.

Our Halloween party will be on Friday after the parade. If you are interested in helping out with the party, please let me or our room mom Melissa Sorensen know. Thanks for being willing to help!

Calendars and Poems
Reading calendars are due back on Friday. Poems will be passed off on Thursday.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences are going to be on November 4 and 5. Please plan ahead to make sure you are able to attend. If you are unable to come on those evenings, please let me know ahead of time and we can conference before or after school. This is a good time to visit about your child and make some goals of how we can all work together to help your child improve.

Also, with 26 students, it will be two long nights for me. Please try to come as early as you can so I don't run out of time towards the end! Thanks for your understanding and cooperation with this!

Red Ribbon Week
Next week (November 2-6) will be Red Ribbon Week. Watch for more info on this.

Volunteers
Volunteer calendars are coming home today! I love to have you in so please send them back with the time that is convenient for you. If you have had a change to your schedule, and want to start coming in, just let me know!

It's a busy week--and I feel like I have forgotten something. But, hopefully, it's just my trying to adjust back to school as well!

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns. I appreciate all your feedback on how things are going here at school.

Thanks,
Miss Merritt

Writing Prompt

This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!

Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)

Prompt Week #1
Narrative Story (needs a beginning, middle, and an end)
Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

May Poems

Seed, Sprout, Flower

A seed is planted:
First a sprout,
then stem,
and leaves,
and buds
come out.
Buds grow bigger,
smelling sweet,
bees and birds come
'round to eat.
Bees and birds
help flowers spread
their new seeds on
the garden bed...
A seed is planted.

Friends are found
Most anywhere.
