Dear Parents,
This is your last note from me this year! We have a few crazy things going on this week. Here's a quick glance:
Spelling Bee
We will be having a class spelling bee today, Monday, June 8 . Our top 3 students will go on to the A Track Spelling Bee. This will take place on Wednesday, June 10. Please remember that this activity is just for fun. Don't let your child stress over this!
Tote Tray Cleaning
To help me get ready for the end of the year, I will be sending home your child's tote tray for them to clean. It will come home on Tuesday, June 9. We have talked about how during the year it was their responsibility to keep it clean, so they will be bringing it home to clean it. They just need to be cleaned (soap and water usually do the job, if is really bad, a Mr. Clean scrubber can get the crayon and things out!). Thank you so much for helping me get this done. Tote trays will be due back on Wednesday, June 10!
Field Day
Field day is on Thursday, June 11. Please have your child come prepared for this activity with a towel, a hat if wanted, and sunscreen. I have gone ahead and purchased water bottles for each of your children for field day. They will not need to bring a water bottle (this will help me from losing water bottles and worrying about finding them!).
Last Day of School
The last day of school is Friday, June 12. This day we will be spending the day doing some fun end of year closing activities. We will be dismissed at normal times on Friday, at 1:25.
Thank you so much for all of your help and support you've shown to your students and myself this year. I appreciate all of your help as I went through the vigorous program of National Boards and your children were a very important part of that this year! Hopefully I pass, but if not, I will get the opportunity to redo parts next year. I feel I have grown as a teacher from this experience and I have been able to reflect on things I have done well and need to work on! Thanks for being part of this experience with me!
One of the most important things your child can do during their break is to keep reading. Get involved in summer reading programs at your local library (I am a library advocate because I have helped run several summer reading programs when I was younger!). Reading will help them to continue to use the skills and knowledge they have gained this year and will help them as they begin 2nd grade.

Writing Prompt
This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!
Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)

Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.

About Miss Merritt
I am originally from Blackfoot, Idaho. I love small towns! I attended BYU-Idaho for my undergraduate studies and received my Masters degree through Southern Utah University. I recently passed my National Boards and am glad to say I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I love learning and enjoy helping others love it too! This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade.
I love reading! When I was younger, I used to work in libraries and I have developed a great love of childrens books. I love books by Barbara Park, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood. I have currently been reading classics like Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
I love the outdoors as well. I love camping and hiking, but I also love traveling and seeing new places. I am a big fan of the beach and I love swimming! I have been to Thailand a few times (my mom is from there!) and I love to see the world. Every year I have a goal to go on a vacation somewhere new.

I just wanted to tell you thanks. This has been a great year for Sydney at school she has had fun and learned and grown so much. I am so grateful to you for making this year good for her and having patience with her also. You are a great teacher and I hope my other children can have you for their teacher. Have a fun summer!
